(owner guarding)

What is Owner Guarding?

Formally known as owner guarding is a behavioral issue where a dog exhibits aggressive behavior towards another person or dog due to a misunderstanding in the relationship dynamic where the dog begins to claim you and treat your affection as a resource. Humans interpret this as jealousy, but dogs view it on the same level as their favorite toy.

Signs of Owner Guarding

Owner guarding can present through a range of behaviors, including:

  • Growling: Low, threatening growls directed at anyone who approaches the owner or intrudes on their space.

  • Snapping or Biting: Aggressive snapping or biting towards people or animals perceived as a threat to the owner.

  • Body Blocking: Positioning themselves between the owner and others or standing in a protective stance.

  • Intense Staring: Fixating on anyone who approaches the owner or comes too close.

  • Aggressive Barking: Barking aggressively at anyone who the dog perceives as a threat to their owner.

Causes of Owner Guarding

Owner guarding can result from various factors:

  • Instinctive Behavior: Dogs may have instinctive protective tendencies, wanting to safeguard their owner from perceived threats.

  • Previous Experiences: Negative experiences, such as past abuse or trauma involving people or animals, may contribute to protective behaviors.

  • Lack of Socialization: Insufficient exposure to positive interactions with strangers or other animals can lead to fear-based guarding behaviors.

  • Reinforcement of Aggression: Unintentionally reinforcing aggressive behavior through attention or reactions can exacerbate owner guarding.

  • Interactions with Other Animals: Other pets or animals approaching the owner or entering the owner's space.

  • New People or Situations: Unfamiliar people or changes in routine or environment that may cause anxiety or perceived threats.

  • Perceived Threats: Any situation where the dog perceives a potential threat to their owner’s safety.

Behavioral Characteristics

Owner guarding can vary in severity and may include:

  • Mild Aggression: Subtle signs such as growling or a stiff body posture without physical aggression.

  • Moderate Aggression: More pronounced behaviors, including snapping or increased likelihood of biting.

  • Severe Aggression: Aggressive responses that may involve biting or severe defensive actions, potentially posing safety risks.
